Space heaters can be a convenient way for people to warm up a small space, especially as the colder months arrive. It’s important that the devices are used with caution to ensure a blaze doesn’t occur.
The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services says those who are looking to purchase a space heater should ensure it has a label from a nationally recognized company. Furthermore, they say the the device needs to be kept away from water and not left operating unattended.
The Mississippi Insurance Department recommends that in addition to being watchful of space heaters, homeowners make sure they smoke alarms are in working order.
“Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of people dying in home fires in half,” says Mississippi Commissioner of Insurance and State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney.
Not only do smoke detectors help people survive a fire, they may help one save on homeowner’s insurance. Many insurers offer discounts or special rates for those who have special safety devices installed. Security systems are another layer of protection that often qualifies for a reduced rate on coverage.
